It’s an Audi A4 2.0 TDI. Sadly it’s not a manual, but the transmission is a 7-speed (DSG, I think?) which is decently fun. I have had it for a day so far. I went on an early morning drive today, and I discovered that it can do a sustained 130 mph (210 kph) on the Autobahn. On flat ground and downhill, it can do 140 mph.

It’s a DSG, or S-Tronic in Audi speak.

How are you enjoying Europe?
Any differences in driving from the U.S.?
What driving manner or system would you take home if you could (ie lane discipline, road etiquette, roundabouts, parking, etc...)?
Food?

My sincere condolences for having to drive a Sales-rep spec Audi for extended periods of time.

Haha, that’s true. It has few benefits over the 1.8T Golf that I am leasing as my daily driver at home in the US . I’m pretty sure my Golf is faster, and I’d say the interiors are comparably nice.

I like it. Lane discipline is so much better in Germany than what I witness on a daily basis in the US.
I can't say I entirely understand how parking works in Germany. There are are a lot of things that look like sidewalks, but people seem to park on them.
German food is too heavy for me to good eat every day, but there are plenty of
Indian and Asian restaurants in Germany that offer
healthy meals
.

There are multiple outputs available for that 2.0 tdi in the A4. 122, 150 and 190 hp, and maybe more options. Given your top speed I bet you’ve got the weakest one, maybe the middle one. The cheap lease special.

That last sentence is going to stir up some serious outrage with german motoring publications, because Audi interiors are by default way better in every way than anything ever.

I’d wager its the middle one. 210 for 150hp is pretty much the norm.

My 406 with 300+k km on the odometer and, when new, 138 hp can still reach 210 kmh on GPS (220++ on the speedometer). Which is why I expected a newish A4 with slightly less hp but better gearing to do similar. However, looking at the official top speed I would guess you are correct. :)

The block paving is a thing all over central Europe, it’s in parts, economy, e cology and safety. It can be confusing as each country does it slightly differently so you need to keep your wits about you. Remember, the pedestrian rules* (except Holland, the cyclist rules) .
Only park in clearly marked areas or you will ge t a ticket. Lol.
German food can be quite heavy but I’m biased when I say, tuck into the Indian food.

Back on the return trip from our Mazda/Austalia mini meet I had a bit of a top speed run in the Maxi King, assisted by the downhill sections of the A7 around the Kasseler Berge. I managed to hit the fuel cutoff at GPS verified 225kph. Gave me a good scare because fuel cutoff is nothing like in video games, it literally takes away all the power for a good 30 sec , I literally thought I had blown the engine. Also taking corners downhill on less than perfect tarmac at over 200kph in a softly sprung 23 year old car with a beam rear axle is interesting.

Hahaha.
I think VW forgot to dumb-down the basic Mk7 Golf . It’s fairly peppy out of the box, and a quick software tune can make the base model Golf as fast as a stock GTI. In my biased view, the interior of a basic $22000 Golf is as pleasant a the interior of a base model 3-series, A4, or C-class. That said, if you load up any of those luxury cars with the premium interior packages, they do get significantly nicer than the Golf inside.

I was trying to piece it together based on the online configurator. I think I am driving the 150hp version.

Almost always registered in Munich. Rental cars in Germany are a fixation for some people (including me when I’m there).

Interesting! I am pretty good at picking up on subtle cues of license plates and rental car stickers/ barcodes in the US, but I am new at this in Germany.

I’m kind of a nerd about this. In the US, I look for a plate with no frames, barcode, sometimes specific (often basic) trim levels, and in some states, a commercial or fleet plate.
In Germany, the plate suffix is often a hint, but not a guarantee. Sixt is M, Avis is EU, Europcar is HH, Hertz is DN, Enterprise is WI, and there are some smaller firms too. German rental cars are often a much higher spec than NA rental cars, so the car itself isn’t as much of a giveaway.
There’s even a forum devoted to rental cars in Germany: https://www.mietwagen-talk.de/
My last rental in Germany ended up being a nice surprise:
I had to pay a small upgrade fee, but worth it.

I loved driving in Germany. I was just there a couple weeks ago on my honeymoon. Our rental was a 6spd Ford Focus wagon. I had always assumed the autobahn was one particular highway. You can imagine my surprise when I realized I had been naive all this years
